New directions: Yoga Teacher Training in Spain

30 year old Melissa Irvine works as a consultant in the financial industry by day but in her spare time does all she can to work towards making an all important career change. She is planning on giving up the financial world for a a rewarding career as a yoga instructor and this summer she took part in Kathy Ward’s 200 hour therapeutic yoga teacher training programme in Alicante for her vital next step. She gives us a rundown on the training course.

Living in the USA, I chose Spain because…I wanted to go to a therapeutic yoga teacher program in an immersion format and there are not many programs available in that format. The costs of the course in Spain were the same price or cheaper than what was available in the US, so I decided to go to Spain. Additionally, I like the smaller classes. There was a limit of 12 candidates so I knew I’d get more personal attention.

A typical day…started with a yoga class every morning at 7:00. Then we had breakfast. That was followed by classroom instruction. Then tea, we would continue with either more classroom instruction or projects we were working on. That was followed by lunch. Again, we had instruction or projects to work on until dinner. Most of our nights ended with a meditation or student led yoga class.  I haven’t done a teacher training before but I have gone on yoga retreats. This one was much more organized and the staff was incredibly responsive.

I particular enjoyed the location…it was peaceful and serene. Every morning I was woken up by birds singing, it was like an orchestra.

One of the highlights of the course…was that it was extremely informative and well planned. The teachers and staff were incredibly helpful. The instruction was very clear and it was also enjoyable. I feel very prepared to teach and landed my first teaching job a few weeks after the retreat.

If I had to describe this course in three words, I would say…life changing, intense, fun.

I left this course…feeling an inner peace and looking forward to the 500 hour programme to start!
